The 10 Rules for Making it as a Voice Actor

1. It’s not enough to be good with accents and different voices. You have to be able to “become” the characters your voice is portraying. That is, you have to be able to act. So, take some acting lessons if you haven’t already. In fact, take some anyway. It never hurts to learn new techniques.

2. Produce a short demo reel – 90 to 180 seconds, max. – that shows your versatility with different voices, moods, and products. P.S., record it on a CD, not a tape.

3. Get an agent. Get an agent. Get an agent. Get an agent in every city where you might find work. Or join a stable of voices at a voiceover production studio. How do you do that. Call them up, ask if you can audition or send them your demo reel.

4. Grow a thick skin. You’re going to lose far more auditions than you win. Don’t take it personally, every actor has the same experience. Remember, that it’s partly a numbers game. The more auditions you do, the better your chances of landing work.

Let your gratefulness attract success
By being grateful or thankful, we create thoughts that attract positive energy. But when we are ungrateful the opposite occurs. It is important to be grateful, because when we then seem to trigger a powerful chain of events that somehow connects us to our creativity. Grateful thoughts attract similar positive thoughts and when these connect, amazing things happen!

Just do it
“Show business is a very tough business. Once you decide to join the ranks of unemployed actors, you must resign yourself to the possibility that you may never make it. Only those who stick it out for the long haul ever succeed. You should not set time limits on yourself.

That amazing success tool: Your voice!
Whether you are a professional voice talent or not, your voice, the words you choose and the way you say them are crucial to getting what you want from life.
It doesn't matter if you are not speaking into a microphone and broadcasting your voice to thousands of people – each person that you speak to is your audience.  In fact, you, yourself, are part of the audience you're speaking to. The words you choose to think or speak affect how you act, how you live, and the values you live by.

The same principles apply in the voiceover business. Although it may appear that the One Stop Voice Shop is simply a place to buy voiceovers, what we do goes much deeper than that simple transaction.

The Battle For Brain Space
So you figure branding is just something for the big guys to worry about? Think again. This month we take a look at an article written by Ted Matthews who is a brand expert based in Toronto with over 28 years of experience.

It's a crazy overcommunicated world, and it's getting worse. The average businessperson going on about their working life is bombarded with upwards of 3,500 commercial messages in the course of their day.

Make the best of your audition
You’ve got a great voice. You’re relaxed and as comfortable as you can be under the circumstances. Now, just before you begin to read, hear your voice in your mind. Imagine its tone and timbre filling the studio. Imagine that it is the perfect voice for the role. Now project that voice with the confidence of a winner.
